... if I had been one of his drinking companions I wouldn't have indulged his cynicism (which I think was more cry for help than anything else), nor dismissed his indignation (which I would have shared).
Maybe he wouldn't have become so diseased. Or been somewhat less self-destructive. Self-loathing is a terrible thing.
